Private Music Instruction

Rubén Dario
Rojas-Marquez

Personalized lessons in Guitar, Piano, and Vocals.

All levels, ages, and backgrounds welcome.

Background in Jazz, Classical, R&B, Finger-style, Blues, Rock, Folk, Music Theory and Improvisation.

Professional instrumentalist with extensive experience playing and singing together.

Localized in Santa Monica, California.

Associate of McCabe’s Guitar Shop Music School

"I think that music, being an expression of the human heart or the human being itself, does express just what is happening. The whole of the human experience at that particular time is being expressed. In any situation that we find in our lives, when there's something that we feel should be better, we must exert effort to try and make it better. So it's the same socially, musically, politically, in any department of your life."

John Coltrane

Teaching Philosophy

Learning music is a personal experience that is different for every individual. Music is a vast landscape to learn from, and each person has different interests. Whether it is music theory, chord harmony, improvisation, reading ability, repertoire, finger-style, Salsa, Bach, or Jazz, each subject has something that can help your growth as a musician.

I try to create a curriculum that encompasses what each individual student is curious to learn. In a more general sense, I always try to incorporate short-term easier pieces, long-term more difficult pieces, technique practices, and applicable theory practices. This approach has been shown to help my students build a comprehensive understanding of their instrument that allows them to play what they want, how they want.

All it takes is time and consistency. I try to emphasize the patience one must practice when learning an instrument. Many measurable developments in your playing will happen gradually without you noticing the immediate moment you get better. There will be days where you sit down to play and just realize, "Woah, I can actually do that now!"

Booking Policies and Information

My general teaching hours are:

  • Monday - Thursday: 12:00-8:30

  • Sunday: 11:00-7:30

Weekly Scheduling
Weekly students will have priority over the most popular time frames which are :

  • Monday - Thursday : 4:00-8:30

  • Sunday: 11:00-7:30

Once lessons become regular, weekly students are switched to monthly billing.
This will guarantee the spot is reserved for the student on a weekly basis.
Requests for each months tuition will be sent out on the 1st of the month.

In case of a cancellation, one lesson a month can be credited to the following month.
Anything beyond the one credited lesson can be rescheduled for another time.
Because I must prioritize consistency, any weekly student who regularly cancels is at risk of loosing their reserved time.

Bi-Weekly Scheduling
Anytime can be reserved for Bi-Weekly sessions, but I can promise consistent availability to anyone booking on

  • Monday - Thursday: 12:00-4:00

Students meeting on a Bi-Weekly basis can switch the time of the session according to their preferences and the times available.
Students who meet every other week can pay for each individual session, or upfront for the two lessons within the month. Whatever is preferred.

A La Carte scheduling
There are several open time-slots each week and students are welcome to reserve a time in advance whenever they like.
I have an active waitlist that offers open slots to students waiting for a convenient time.
I receive common reschedules and cancellations with about about two spots opening up each week from my more popular times listed above.

MyMusicStaff
MyMusicStaff is the online host of all lesson scheduling services.
There you can see my fully updated availability and book lessons digitally. Please use MyMusic Staff for reschedules and cancellations.

Notice of Cancellation
Notice must be given more than 24 hours in advance. Please let me know as much ahead of time as possible.
That way I have sufficient time to offer the time-slot to other students who may be waiting for an opening.
Please always cancel through MyMusicStaff.

Rescheduling
Please use MyMusicStaff for any rescheduling, or alternatively reach out to me directly to inquire about all available times. Make-Up lessons will be prioritized and scheduled as promptly as possible.

Remote Sessions
Remote options are offered at the students convenience and for any lesson frequency.
Facetime is the preferred platform, but Zoom, Google Meets, and Skype are also supported.

Payment
Payment is typically done through Zelle. Venmo and Cash are also usable.

Communication
Text is always preferred but email can also be used if more convenient. I try to respond to all messages within 24 hours.
Because I am in lessons for about 7 hours and finish past 7:30/8:00, any messages sent in the afternoon will often be responded to the following day.

Lesson Reminders will be sent out through email two days before the lesson takes place.
